Lok Sabha Elections 2009 - from Karnataka

Congress general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad (former CM of Jammu and Kashmir) today asserted that India was economically strong under UPA. Even while the entire world reeled under a bout of severe economic slow down and cash crunch, India’s economy had not budged and people had lived a normal life.

This achievement was not an ordinary one, all major economies of the world had shook under the economic slowdown and severe financial depression, but due to adroit financial management and extra steps taken by the Prime Minister and the finance minister the country could steer clear of the disaster he added. He was speaking at a public function at Ullal in the Mangalore Lok Sabha Constituency on Tuesday night.

Showering praises on the Congress candidate B. Janardhana Poojary Mr. Azad said he was a workhorse, and one of the few clean politicians this country every produced. He always had the welfare of the people on top of his services are needed for the country at the highest law making body. He said through loan melas in the 1970s Mr. Poojary had started a revolution in financing the poor people which even today is an outstanding example of pro poor programme.

He said Karnataka was one of the most progressive states and it had become the world capital of software and IT industries under Mr. S.M. Krishna’s government but under Mr. Yeddyurappa the state has hit a retro track and has become notorious for anti people activities including attacks on minorities and churches. Mr. Azad said the home minister of Karnataka Dr. V.S. Acharya had made a mischievous statement calling the Congress leaders communal. But the people of the country knows who is communal by the actions of the BJP and its fringe groups. Others who were present on the occasion included Congress leaders Ivan D’Souza, U.T. Khader, Suresh Ballal and Kallige Tharanath Shetty.
